    Preparing the foundations for video-based, practice-placement support: establishing the role from a students’ perspective

    Currently, many placement-based health programme students within the UK are supported through face-to-face visits from university staff. Whilst cited in literature as being of value, the face-to-face nature of this contact is not supported. Alternatives including video-based communications methods offer the potential for cost effective, environmentally responsible support. However, in order to establish the fitness for purpose of alternative approaches, the content and purpose of current support needs to be understood. This project aimed to investigate student perceptions of the ideal content and purpose of clinical support visits, and alternatives to the current face-to-face approach. Fifty-six Physiotherapy undergraduate students responded to questionnaires with a further nine participating in a follow-up focus group. Participants emphasised the value of the visit in guiding learning, ensuring progression and resolving arising issues, and highlighted concerns over alternative approaches. Focus group participants discussed the importance of personal and professional confidence in directing requirements for support, and went on to propose a menu of options for methods of communication.Whilst limited in some applications, video technologies may be one of the options. Overall, however, this project supports the need for consideration of individualised learning journeys within curriculum planning

    Presented at the 2000 USCID international conference, Challenges facing irrigation and drainage in the new millennium on June 20-24 in Fort Collins, Colorado.Verification-based planning is a tool to improve the irrigation system modernization planning process and to effectively monitor the post-project effects on system performance. Modernization of irrigation systems results in waterflow path changes within the system. The planning process for modernization of an irrigation system requires careful documentation and analysis of the pre-project (without-project) condition and quantified prediction of the effects of the planned improvement (with-project). Procedures and strategies for predicting, monitoring and quantifying Targeted Flow Path Changes caused by an irrigation system modernization project for both without- and with-project conditions are presented

    On the influence of the mean-free-path parameter on intranuclear cascade calculations

    In a recent letter GINOCCHIO and BLANN (2) compared results of intranuclear cascade model (ICM) calculations obtained either with a nucleon mean-free-path (mfp) in nuclear matter corresponding to free 3~-2C scattering cross-sections, or with a four times longer mfp. The latter assumption was reported to give far poorer agreement with the experimental data; and this conclusion was reported as evidence in favour of the use of the shorter mfp values in pre-equilibrium decay models, whose alternate formulations have been lately discussed at some length (2.6). We maintain tha t ICI~[ calculations performed with the free ~ ~ scatter mfp in general do not afford an accurate reproduction of the excitation functions of reactions induced by protons of some tens of MeV, and of the energy integrated spectra of the emitted particles. In fact, published results of ICM calculations have shown a systematic tendency to underestimate the emission of high-energy particles, and to overestimate compound-nucleus production. We made this statement, which agrees with an opinion already expressed by MILLER (D, on the basis of the findings of several works cited in ref. (2). Our belief is further supported by other results of BERTINI et al. (S) (e l . Specifically fig. 4 thereof), and even by the figures reported by the authors of ref. (1). However, in spite of such inadequacies of the ICM calculations, the model seems to retain a good measure of appeal as an intui t ive tool much in use for practical purposes

    Iso-osmotic regulation of nitrate accumulation in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

    Concerns about possible health hazards arising from human consumption of lettuce and other edible vegetable crops with high concentrations of nitrate have generated demands for a greater understanding of processes involved in its uptake and accumulation in order to devise more sustainable strategies for its control. This paper evaluates a proposed iso-osmotic mechanism for the regulation of nitrate accumulation in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) heads. This mechanism assumes that changes in the concentrations of nitrate and all other endogenous osmotica (including anions, cations and neutral solutes) are continually adjusted in tandem to minimise differences in osmotic potential of the shoot sap during growth, with these changes occurring independently of any variations in external water potential. The hypothesis was tested using data from six new experiments, each with a single unique treatment comprising a separate combination of light intensity, N source (nitrate with or without ammonium) and nitrate concentration carried out hydroponically in a glasshouse using a butterhead lettuce variety. Repeat measurements of plant weights and estimates of all of the main soluble constituents (nitrate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic anions, chloride, phosphate, sulphate and soluble carbohydrates) in the shoot sap were made at intervals from about 2 weeks after transplanting until commercial maturity, and the data used to calculate changes in average osmotic potential in the shoot. Results showed that nitrate concentrations in the sap increased when average light levels were reduced by between 30 and 49 % and (to a lesser extent) when nitrate was supplied at a supra-optimal concentration, and declined with partial replacement of nitrate by ammonium in the external nutrient supply. The associated changes in the proportions of other endogenous osmotica, in combination with the adjustment of shoot water content, maintained the total solute concentrations in shoot sap approximately constant and minimised differences in osmotic potential between treatments at each sampling date. There was, however, a gradual increase in osmotic potential (ie a decline in total solute concentration) over time largely caused by increases in shoot water content associated with the physiological and morphological development of the plants. Regression analysis using normalised data (to correct for these time trends) showed that the results were consistent with a 1:1 exchange between the concentrations of nitrate and the sum of all other endogenous osmotica throughout growth, providing evidence that an iso-osmotic mechanism (incorporating both concentration and volume regulation) was involved in controlling nitrate concentrations in the shoot

    A new instability of accretion disks around compact magnetic stars

    Aperiodic variability and Quasi Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) are observed from accretion disks orbiting white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, suggesting that the flow is universally broken up into discrete blobs. We consider the interaction of these blobs with the magnetic field of a compact, accreting star, where diamagnetic blobs suffer a drag. We show that when the magnetic moment is not aligned with the spin axis, the resulting force is pulsed, and this can lead to resonance with the oscillation of the blobs around the equatorial plane; a resonance condition where energy is effectively pumped into non--equatorial motions is then derived. We show that the same resonance condition applies for the quadrupolar component of the magnetic field. We discuss the conditions of applicability of this result, showing that they are quite wide. We also show that realistic complications, such as chaotic magnetic fields, buoyancy, radiation pressure, evaporation, Kelvin--Helmholtz instability, and shear stresses due to differential rotation do not affect our results. In accreting neutron stars with millisecond periods, we show that this instability leads to Lense-Thirring precession of the blobs, and that damping by viscosity can be neglected.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.     Evidence for anisotropic polar nanoregions in relaxor PMN: A neutron study of the elastic constants and anomalous TA phonon damping

    We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevectors. The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the acoustic phonon energy linewidth are directly correlated with the elastic diffuse scattering, indicating that polar nanoregions are the cause of the anomalous behavior. The damping and softening vanish for q -> 0, i.e. for long-wavelength acoustic phonons, which supports the notion that the anomalous damping is a result of the coupling between the relaxational component of the diffuse scattering and the harmonic TA phonons. Therefore, these effects are not due to large changes in the elastic constants with temperature because the elastic constants correspond to the long-wavelength limit. We compare the elastic constants we measure to those from Brillouin scattering and to values reported for pure PT. We show that while the values of C44 are quite similar, those for C11 and C12 are significantly less in PMN and result in a softening of (C11-C12) over PT. There is also an increased elastic anisotropy (2C44/(C11-C12)) versus that in PT. These results suggest an instability to TA2 acoustic fluctuations in relaxors. We discuss our results in the context of the debate over the "waterfall" effect and show that they are inconsistent with TA-TO phonon coupling or other models that invoke the presence of a second optic mode.Comment: (21 pages, 16 figures, to be published in Physical Review B

    Frequency-wavenumber spectrum of the free surface of shallow turbulent flows over a rough boundary

    Data on the frequency-wavenumber spectra and dispersion relation of the dynamic water surface in an open channel flow are very scarce. In this work, new data on the frequency-wavenumber spectra were obtained in a rectangular laboratory flume with a rough bottom boundary, over a range of subcritical Froude numbers. These data were used to study the dispersion relation of the surface waves in such shallow turbulent water flows. The results show a complex pattern of surface waves, with a range of scales and velocities. When the mean surface velocity is faster than the minimum phase velocity of gravity-capillary waves, the wave pattern is dominated by stationary waves that interact with the static rough bed. There is a coherent three-dimensional pattern of radially propagating waves with the wavelength approximately equal to the wavelength of the stationary waves. Alongside these waves, there are freely propagating gravity-capillary waves that propagate mainly parallel to the mean flow, both upstream and downstream. In the flow conditions where the mean surface velocity is slower than the minimum phase velocity of gravity-capillary waves, patterns of non-dispersive waves are observed. It is suggested that these waves are forced by turbulence. The results demonstrate that the free surface carries information about the underlying turbulent flow. The knowledge obtained in this study paves the way for the development of novel airborne methods of non-invasive flow monitoring

    Raman and Infrared-Active Phonons in Hexagonal HoMnO3_3 Single Crystals: Magnetic Ordering Effects

    Polarized Raman scattering and infrared reflection spectra of hexagonal HoMnO3_3 single crystals in the temperature range 10-300 K are reported. Group-theoretical analysis is performed and scattering selection rules for the second order scattering processes are presented. Based on the results of lattice dynamics calculations, performed within the shell model, the observed lines in the spectra are assigned to definite lattice vibrations. The magnetic ordering of Mn ions, which occurs below TN_N=76 K, is shown to effect both Raman- and infrared-active phonons, which modulate Mn-O-Mn bonds and, consequently, Mn exchange interaction.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    L^2-Betti numbers of one-relator groups

    We determine the L^2-Betti numbers of all one-relator groups and all surface-plus-one-relation groups (surface-plus-one-relation groups were introduced by Hempel who called them one-relator surface groups). In particular we show that for all such groups G, the L^2-Betti numbers b_n^{(2)}(G) are 0 for all n>1. We also obtain some information about the L^2-cohomology of left-orderable groups, and deduce the non-L^2 result that, in any left-orderable group of homological dimension one, all two-generator subgroups are free.Comment: 18 pages, version 3, minor changes.
